Well, maybe it wasn't Microsoft persuading the powers that be to move, but someone did - maybe a business partner - and the poster's point was that if IBM had got involved and talked to the company the decision might not have been taken - but they didn't until it was far too late.
What does better mean? Better in the eyes of the decision makers, they can have whatever criteria they want, it probably varies for each case. This is why IBM need to get involved in these cases, not just point to lots of marketing campaigns.
And in terms of CEOs (and CIOs in larger organisations) wanting to listen to third parties I think that's quite valid. Thinking of a merger, there are maybe two different IT teams saying different things, the Microsoft team talking up Exchange, the Notes team talking up Domino - who are they going to listen to? The most persuasive third party (in the above case that's a Microsoft firm), that's who. And in this case there was no third party talking up Domino.
